Sustainable Food Procurement

Goals, Progress, and Current Projects:

The goals of the Sustainable Food Procurement Working Group, outlined in the Food Policy Council’s Strategic Plan, include:

SHORT TERM – Focus on school food including, how we can make school food
procurement processes and policies more transparent. Work with the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE) to update the Healthy Schools Act (HSA), and convene stakeholders around central kitchen facility included in the HSA.

  • Progress and Current Projects:
    • Advocacy guide: The FPC created an advocacy guide for the Healthy Students Amendment Act of 2017 (pending), which would amend the Healthy Schools Act of 2010 to increase the District’s investment in school breakfast, require a study on best practices for building a central kitchen facility, and require DCPS to undergo a Good Food Purchasing Program baseline assessment, among other amendments.

LONG TERM –Study the Good Food Policy program, work with DC Public Schools and other partners determine if the program is a good fit for DC.

  • Progress and Current Projects:
    • Partnerships: The FPC participates in the Good Food Purchasing Program working group and the DCPS School Food Advisory Group.

LONG TERM – Focus on wasted food in the District by learning more about the scope of the issue, opportunities to shift policy, and opportunities to engage. Determine role for FPC in food waste issue and collaborate with partner organizations to advance food waste.

  • Progress and Current Projects:
    • Partnerships: The FPC participates in the DC Food Recovery Working Group, which focuses in decreasing wasted food in the District.
    • Advocacy guide: The FPC created an advocacy guide for the Save Good Food Amendment Act of 2018 (passed October 2018), which incentivized food donation through tax credits, expanded liability protections for food donors, limiting the types of products required to carry date labels, and created a food donation best practices guide.
